Judges 1:1 “After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, ‘Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the Canaanites?”
The Lord Jesus Christ is the heir who will inherit all things (Heb 1:2,4). Yet through His grace, and because we are “in Him”, we too will have all those inheritance (Rom 8:17)! While the fullness of our inheritance is in Heaven (1 Pet 1:4), the full extent of salvation itself is our inheritance (Heb 1:14) and through the Holy Spirit of the Lord we are still called to enter into our position “in Christ’ now being heirs of salvation (Gal 4:6-7).
The sad thing about the book of Judges is that, even though Joshua as already conquered the Promised Land, it shows the failure of God’s people to press into the inheritance that God has for them, and even worse, it shows the failure to retain even that which has already been conquered! So Judges is a warning to us all. A warning of what can happen if we fail to go on, or through compromise, allow the enemy to rob us of the benefits of our inheritance “in Christ.”
