A common question people ask is, “Did Adam have eternal life when he was created?” The simple answer, according to the Bible, is NO.
In Genesis 3:22, God says that Adam and Eve would have obtained eternal life had they eaten from the Tree of Life. Thus, since Adam did not partake the Tree of Life that will give him Eternal Life, he has therefore no eternal life. He needs the Tree of Life.
This question leads us to a deeper truth that every believer needs to understand: All people are spiritually dead because of sin and need Jesus Christ to receive eternal life. To fully grasp this, we must look at three key biblical truths:
Three Key Biblical Truths
1. All Humanity is Spiritually Dead
2. Jesus Christ is Eternal Life
3. To Have Eternal Life, we must Possess the Lord Jesus Christ and be Born-Again
1. All Humanity is Spiritually Dead
When Adam sinned, death entered the world— the spiritual death. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:22:
“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
This means we are all born spiritually dead. Our bodies may be alive, but our spirit – the supposed to be our connection to God—are lifeless because of sin. This is why we desperately need salvation through our Lord Jesus.
Paul further explains in Romans 5:12:
“Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.”
This verse teaches us that spiritual death is universal. No one is born with a living spirit. Even the faithful people of the Old Testament did not receive Eternal life during their lifetime. They are spiritually dead. But what does it really mean to be spiritually dead? It means we are separated from God. The Bible describes this in Ephesians 2:1:
“And you were dead in your trespasses and sins.”
Before our spirit was quickened by Christ’s Spirit, we are spiritually lifeless. We might have emotions, thoughts, and a conscience, but our spirits—the part of us that connects us to God—are cut off from Him. It means we cannot understand spiritual things. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 2:14:
“The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
This is why people who don’t possess Christ often struggle to understand spiritual truths. Without spiritual life, we cannot truly grasp the things of God.
2. Jesus Christ Is Eternal Life
The second key truth is that eternal life is not just about living forever—it is found in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is possessing the Lord Jesus. The Lord Himself said in John 17:3:
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
Eternal life is not simply endless existence. It is being connected to our Lord Jesus Christ. Without Him, no one can have eternal life. He alone is Eternal Life. The Bible makes this clear in Romans 6:23:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Eternal life is a gift from God. We cannot earn it through our own good works or religious efforts—it comes only through the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 John 5:11-12 explains further:
“God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
This means if you have the Lord Jesus, you have eternal life. If you don’t have the Lord, you don’t have eternal life. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. No matter how religious or moral you are, as long as you don’t possess the Lord Jesus Christ, you don’t have eternal Life. 1 John 1:2 calls Him “the Life,” and in John 14:6, the Lord Jesus boldly states:
“I am the way, the truth, and the LIFE. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
This means there is no other way to eternal life except through our Lord Jesus Christ. Even the Old Testament believers who followed God did not receive eternal life. Because Eternal Life was only given after Christ resurrected from the dead. True eternal life only comes from Christ alone.
3. To Have Eternal Life, We Must Be Born-Again
So how do we receive this eternal life? The Lord Jesus tells us in John 3:3:
“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Being “born again” means that our dead spirits are made alive by the Holy Spirit (the Spirit of Christ). This happens when we put our faith in Christ. John 3:16 lays out the simple gospel:
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
This new birth is not physical—it is spiritual. It is what makes us alive to God. Once we are born again, God’s Spirit lives in us. We became one with His Spirit. The Bible says in Romans 8:11:
“If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
This means the same power that raised the Lord Jesus from the dead is now inside every believer, giving us new life. This is why Eternal Life is more than just “living forever.”
Eternal life is about being united with God through Christ—both now and for eternity.
Conclusion: The Journey to Eternal Life
So, did Adam have eternal life when he was created in Genesis 1? The answer is No. Adam still needs to possess it through the Tree of Life. Unfortunately, Adam did not possess It. So he has no Eternal Life. But the Lord God revealed to us again the Tree of Life – who is our Lord Jesus Christ. He alone is Eternal Life.
Here’s what we must remember:
1. All humanity is born spiritually dead. Sin has separated us from God.
2. The Lord Jesus Christ is Eternal Life. It is not something we can earn—it is something only found in Him.
3. To have eternal life, we must be born again. This happens when our spirit is quickened by the Lord Jesus’ Spirit and we are born-again.
Eternal life is not just about not going to hell—it is bringing heaven to us. It is being indwelt by Christ. It is about being fully alive in Christ, both now and forever. If you have never made the decision to surrender your life to the Lord Jesus, now is the time. He is ready to quicken you and give you the gift of eternal life. Will you receive it?
