Gen. 2:17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil can make people both good and evil. Yet, you still have no Life! You are still dead. What do I mean by this? Humanity has fallen and evil is everywhere. We see it every day on the news. But humanity also thinks about goodness and that trying to be good will be good enough with God! Many think that their good works will see them enter Heaven for example. But the Bible correctly shows us the extent of the fall.
The fallen man is “dead” (Eph 2:1) and a dead man needs far more than his own feeble efforts to be good. He cannot actually do anything because he is dead. He cannot contact God, let alone enter heaven. A dead man needs life! That is what the Lord Jesus came to give us. The very thing that we need. Even as believers, we can fall into the trap of just trying to live good lives and not see our ongoing need of Life – His Life!
