Rev 3:1 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: ‘I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.”
There are many churches today that think they are alive but are actually dead. They substitute impressive church programs, magnificent lighting and emotional music instead of the Life that proceeds from the revelation of God. So in the verse above, the Lord Jesus said of these churches that “You have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.” It is fair to say that that is something you wouldn’t want to hear from the Lord about yourself or your church!
Ray Stedman writes: “Hollywood has given us a name for people like that: it calls them “Zombies” — corpses that are alive, that walk about as though they are living but they are really dead. As we read this letter, we are looking at the First Zombie Church of Sardis!” Yikes!
The Life of our Lord (His Spirit), is always the answer to being dead. It isn’t more programs or more services. It is getting back to the heart of Christianity – which is Jesus Himself. Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.” (Eph 5:14)
