Rev 3:3 “…But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.”
To those who had fallen asleep, the Lord Jesus’ coming would be like a “thief.” These are those Christians who were made alive in Christ but then had fallen stagnant and inactive in their spiritual walk. There are many who just go to Church today whose primary concern is not to possess more of Christ and grow spiritually but with other things. They can and normally are ‘good’ people. You would like them… but don’t be one of them! For they are asleep. Most of the churches that they are in don’t talk about the true Gospel. They don’t talk about how to possess the truth. They don’t talk about the Lord’s return. The people attending don’t think about His return or even think He is coming. They have their plans for this life and for those of their children. They don’t give much thought to eternal matters. So His return to them will be like a thief. It will be completely unexpected and they will miss the time of His coming. The door to their escape before the tribulation will be closed as they don’t have enough oil.
This is a serious warning. This warning should be taken very seriously by all of us and not only those who have fallen asleep. We need to be found watching and having enough oil for His return. We want to hear those words “well done good and faithful servant”. We do not want to shrink back in shame from His coming, as 1 John 2:28 states, knowing that we largely wasted our life and lived just for ourselves.
