The Bronze Serpent

2 Kings 18:4 “He broke into pieces the bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it. They called it Nehushtan.”

When Hezekiah became king of Israel, 2 Kings 18:1-3 says he followed the Lord with all his heart and the Lord directed his steps into the ways of righteousness. The first thing he did was to brake the bronze snake made by Moses that was use to heal people from snake bites in the wilderness. People gave it a great name – ‘Nehushtan’ – which means ‘the bronze thing’! Hezekiah broke it because people start worshipping it!

Always remember that which God blesses and uses while our eyes are on Him, He will also curse when it replaces Him. So is there any ‘bronze thing’ in your life that you look to instead of the Lord? It is essential to always keep your eyes on the giver of any gift, and not the gift itself. The Lord may give you a great pastor of your church. If so, thank Him for that. But don’t make him your leader! Your leader should only be the Lord. He should be your absolute alone. Sometimes the Lord uses a minister to help us. That’s fine but don’t let that person take the place of the Lord! It can even be your own spiritual gift. The Lord may enable you to teach or preach or something else. Great… Good for you! But always remember that it is the Lord’s gifting and enabling, not yours.
