Ruth 4:11 “And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem”
The Typology used by God is consistent throughout scriptures. Ruth had to be free from the closer relative so that she could marry Boaz. For us to die to the Law and to be married to Christ is seen as the answer to our deliverance just as it is with Ruth! Imagine you have been married to two husbands…
1st Husband: The LAW
He is holy, righteous and good. (Romans 7:12)
But he demands perfection from you, is unbending, and incapable of giving you any mercy. (Matthew 5:48; Galatians 3:10b; James 2:10)
His rule is simple: Obey him and he will bless you (Deu. 28:1-6), disobey him and he will punish you (Lev. 26:14-46). Your blessing or punishment depends on your works.
But the sad thing is, nothing good dwells in you (Rom. 7:18) and therefore, all your works are just filthy rags (Isa. 64:6). So no matter what you do, you cannot meet his demands (Gal. 2:16, Gal. 3:11, Rom. 3:20).
He brings out the worst in you, awful stuff you didn’t even know was in you. The more you try to please him, the more you fail; and the harder you work, the more clearly you see the corruptions within you, and the power they have over you. (Romans 3:20b; 5:20; 7:5-8, 18; Galatians 5:19-21)
The more you are with him, the more your sins increases (Rom. 5:20).
He curses you whenever you cannot meet all his demands (Gal. 3:10, Gal. 5:3).
Yet he has no strength to offer you. No hope to give you. You become imprisoned by guilt, fear, and condemnation. (Romans 7:10-14; 8:3).
He became the “ministry of death and condemnation” to you (2 Cor. 3:7-9).
But then, a wondrous mystery took place. You were released from the authority, obligation and bonds of that marriage. How? You DIED. You are then married to Grace (Galatians 2:19; Romans 6:4-5; 7:1-4)
2nd Husband: GRACE
You came forth married to Another, One full of grace and truth, even grace upon grace. (Romans 7:4; John 1:16-17; Ephesians 5:30)
This 2nd husband knows that you are not perfect and righteous. Therefore, He became your righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21).
Unlike the 1st one, He does not require your own works. What He wanted for you is to let Him do the work in you (Eph. 2:8-9, Phi. 2:13).
All that your first husband required… this One fully met. He was judged in your place. He died in your place. He also paid up, settled, and closed all your accounts with your former husband, enabling your union with Him to take place — a union both sacred and secure. (Romans 8:3-4, 38-39)
This Husband nourishes and cherishes you. He transforms you, always forgives you, and always does what is best for you. (Ephesians 5:20; Romans 8:28)
Your union with Him produces LIFE — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23; Romans 6:4)
You are dear to His heart, precious in His sight — joined in an indissoluble eternal marriage covenant sealed in His blood. (Song of Solomon 6:3; Luke 22:20; John 3:16; Revelation 19:6-9)
If your 1st husband is the ministry of death and condemnation (2 Cor. 3:7,9), the 2nd is the ministry of glory to you (2 Cor. 3:8-9).
He is the definition of what true love is.
Therefore, do not cling anymore to the former but delight to the latter. Love Him and wait for His soon return. Until that glorious day when you see Him face to face.
