The Children of Light

Eph. 5:8 “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”

Paul told us that we were once darkness. He did not say “you were once in darkness”. Nope. The problem was worse than that. We were darkness! Not just in darkness.

Now, darkness is not dissipated by lecturing or by preaching to it. Darkness is only dissipated by light. Many believers are making the mistake of trying to correct an unbelieving person by lecturing him saying “You shouldn’t be doing that.” This is not the way to approach darkness. You need to be a light. You cannot change an unsaved man by telling him what’s wrong. He needs to be born again in order to change. YOU NEED TO BE A LIGHT TO HIM.

I remember one brother in the church. He came unto me asking for prayers because his wife would never want to come to the church. He told me: “Every morning, before I go to work, I would persuade her to come to church. Again at dinner, I would angrily tell her again to come with me to the church.” It got me thinking about what it would be like to have a nagging husband telling you to come to church two times a day. So I told him never to mention the subject again to his wife. What he should do is to bring her a present every time he got home and be the sweetest husband to her wife possible. “Oh,” he said, “that wouldn’t work. We are supposed to witness.” You see, he didn’t really understand what it meant to be a witness. By being a Light means we need to live as a Light. We need to live as children of Light. People should not only hear the Word through us, they should also see the Word in us.
