The Bible consistently points towards a central theme: teaching humanity how to live spiritually. Every message and revelation in Scriptures guide us toward accessing and living in the spiritual realm. The essence of being spiritual lies in our ability to connect to the spiritual realm, the invisible reality of God’s kingdom.
Heaven and Earth: A Contrast of Realms
Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.”
This foundational verse in Scripture highlights the two distinct realms that God created: the heaven (the spiritual) and the earth (the physical). While Earth is familiar to us, a place filled with physicality and imperfection, heaven exists as an unchanging and eternal realm, filled with truth and spiritual beings.
The characteristics of these two realms can be contrasted as follows:
1. Changing vs. Unchanging
Earth is in constant change. We age, suffer sickness, experience loss, and ultimately face death. In contrast, heaven is eternal and unchanging because it is founded on truth. As 2 Corinthians 4:18 tells us that the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
2. Full of Iniquity vs. Full of Purity
Earth is filled with sin and a hierarchy of powers. It is full of inequity. People strive for status and positions. Heaven, on the other hand, is a realm where everyone is on equal footing, there is no need for power or dominion. The presence of God is what sustains heaven, making positions or status irrelevant.
3. Restricted by Space and Time vs. Unlimited by Space and Time
Earth is governed by physical laws such as space and time. In heaven, these limitations do not exist. The spiritual realm is not bound by physical constraints.
4. Physical Beings vs. Spiritual Beings
The earth is the domain of physical beings like humans and animals, while heaven is the dwelling place of spiritual beings, including angels, and the throne of God Himself.
The Fall of Lucifer and the Battle for Dominion
Lucifer, once an angel of light, desired position beyond what God had given him. Along with other rebellious angels, he left heaven and sought dominion over Earth. As a result, Lucifer and his angels were cast out of heaven and restricted from entering it again (John 8:44). After their fall, they aimed to dominate Earth, establishing spiritual strongholds to prevent humanity from accessing the spiritual realm. This conflict is described in Ephesians 6:12, where Paul writes that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, spiritual forces of evil in high places.
Satan’s ultimate goal is to prevent people from accessing the spiritual realm, the place where they can commune with God. Adam was the first victim in this spiritual battle. The fall of man represents a separation from God and the spiritual realm.
Man: A Microcosm of Heaven and Earth
Human beings are uniquely created as a combination of the physical and spiritual realms. Our bodies represent the physical world, while our spirits are part of the spiritual world. We are designed to be a microcosm of the divine order, with both aspects existing in harmony.
But how can the spiritual transform the physical?
How the Spiritual Realm Changes the Physical World
The spiritual realm has the power to transform the physical because the physical world was framed from the spiritual. Hebrews 11:3 tells us, “By faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by God’s Word, so that what is seen was not made out of what is visible.” This means the physical world is a by-product of the spiritual realm.
Consider the miracles the Lord Jesus performed:
- He multiplied bread and fish (Matthew 14:13-21).
- He turned water into wine (John 2:1-11).
- He healed the sick and raised the dead.
These miracles demonstrate that the material world is subject to spiritual laws. Those who operate in the spiritual realm can alter the physical world through the power of God. This ability is exclusive to God alone. Without God, you cannot perform any of these. Those with the gift of miracles—people whom God uses to alter the “framing” of reality—are given access to the spiritual realm through the Spirit of the Lord.
In Romans 1:20, Paul explains that the invisible attributes of God are clearly seen in the creation of the world. Through the physical, God reveals the spiritual. Even nature serves as a metaphor for spiritual truths, as seen in the parables of the Lord Jesus, where seeds were used to represent the Word of God and a butterfly’s transformation was used to symbolized spiritual rebirth.
The End of the Physical and the Supremacy of the Spiritual
At some point, the physical world as we know it, will be consumed by the spiritual world. As 2 Corinthians 5:4 and 1 Corinthians 15:54 suggest, our mortal bodies will one day be swallowed up by immortality (our spirit). This transformation from physical to spiritual is the ultimate destiny of humanity.
Even though Satan attempted to build a dominion on Earth, his efforts to reach the spiritual realm have failed. The Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:4), symbolized human and demonic efforts to ascend to heaven and conquer the spiritual realm. But no matter what Satan will do, they cannot access the spiritual world.
How to Access the Spiritual Realm
John 3:13 “And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.”
To access the spiritual realm, there is only ONE WAY – our Lord Jesus Christ. We need our Lord Jesus to access heaven. According to the verse above, no one can go to heaven except He that came down from it. This is a description of our Lord. Our Lord is the bridge between heaven and earth. If we want to access the spiritual realm, we must possess Him.
Access to the spiritual realm doesn’t require hearing an audible voice from God. Instead, we receive revelation through His Word. In Hebrews 1:1-2, the writer explains that God now speaks to us through His Son, and by extension, through His Word. Therefore, the key to entering the spiritual realm lies in understanding and applying the revelations given to us that are found in Scriptures.
2 Peter 1:19 emphasizes the importance of God’s Word in guiding us. Just as a lamp shines in a dark place, God’s Word lights our path, leading us into spiritual understanding. To access the spiritual realm, we must saturate our minds with God’s Word.
Set Your Mind on Things Above
Colossians 3:2 commands us to “set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” This means we must fix our focus on spiritual things rather than becoming consumed by the distractions of the material world.
In the Bible, Demas is a striking example of someone who, after following Paul and serving the Lord, deserted the faith because he “loved this present world” (2 Timothy 4:9-10). Earthly possessions are temporary and insignificant compared to the riches of the spiritual realm. This truth is echoed in Abraham’s refusal to accept material wealth from the King of Sodom (Genesis 14:21-23).
Conclusion: Walking in the Spiritual Realm
To walk in the spiritual realm, we must align ourselves with God’s Word and focus on the eternal, not the temporary. Jesus provides the access we need, and His Word is the key to unlocking spiritual truths.
By strengthening our spiritual lives, we allow the spiritual realm to transform our physical world. As we grow in spiritual maturity, we can experience the power of God working through us, altering the physical realm and advancing His kingdom on Earth. One day, our physical bodies will be fully swallowed by our spirit, making it a glorified body, and we will enter into eternity with God.
Until that day, let us live with our minds set on things above, walking in the Spirit, and seeking to access the spiritual realm through the Lord Jesus Christ.
