HOW TO COMMIT YOURSELF TO CHRIST

We all know what it means to be committed. Whether it’s in our marriages, work, or family, commitment is part of life. However, the deepest and most profound commitment we can make is the one we offer to Christ. We all experience spiritual burnout which is the struggle of many believers when we try to balance our earthly commitments while still striving for a dedicated relationship with our Lord.

Our Origin in God: Understanding Our Connection

Before diving into the specifics of how to commit ourselves to Christ, we must remember where we came from. We were made by God, and more importantly, we came from God.

John 1:2-3 and Colossians 1:16-17 emphasize that God created all things, and nothing exists apart from Him. The raw material of our existence is Him. We are not independent beings, but rather, our very lives are a reflection of His essence. As John 8:32 says, “We are of the truth.” We are only free when we are connected to the Truth, who is Christ Himself.

In the beginning, when Adam was created, he did not possess Eternal Life. No creation was made with eternal life, because only God Himself is the source of Eternal Life. If you are not indwelt by God, you have no Eternal Life. 1 John 5:11-12 reminds us that eternal life is not something we possess by nature, but a gift given by God through His Son. Even angels are not inherently eternal; they remain in the spiritual, eternal realm only by choosing to stay connected to the Truth.

If Adam had eternal life from the moment he was created, he would have had no need for God, the sole source of eternal life. There would have been two sources of eternal life—God and Adam—which is impossible. This truth reveals that man must always look to God as the source of life. We were created to depend on Him and draw from His life.

The Fall and the Need for Commitment

The fall of man represents humanity’s disconnection from God. In this disconnection, humanity lost the life and vitality that only comes from being linked to the Creator. God’s desire, however, has always been to control us—not in a manipulative sense, but as a loving Father who desires to lead us back to our purpose and destiny. God longs for a relationship with us, where we are fully committed to Him, and He to us.

The truth is, God wants to be connected to you again. This has been His grand plan from the beginning, and through Christ, He made it possible. John 14:6 makes it clear that only in Christ can we be reconnected to God, and once this connection is made, God commits to us completely and eternally.

God’s Exclusive Commitment to Us

When God connects to us, He commits to us EXCLUSIVELY. Everything He does, He does for us. He cannot detach Himself from us, as His love binds Him to us forever. This should stir a question in our hearts: Are we as committed to Him as He is to us?

In the ministry of Jesus, we see a perfect example of unwavering commitment. Jesus was not committed to any political cause, nor was He swayed by social issues of His day. Even though there were pressing needs all around Him—people begging for healing, political oppression under the Roman Empire, and religious leaders trying to trap Him—Jesus remained committed to one thing: the will of His Father.

He was not committed to the social problems around Him (such as the woman who sought bread).

He did not take up the banner of political freedom for the Jews under Roman rule.

He wasn’t even committed to the physical needs of those crying out for healing.

He resisted the will of His flesh when He faced the cross, remaining committed to God’s plan.

Jesus’ commitment was singular and exclusive: He was committed to God alone.

What It Means to Commit to Christ

Committing to Christ means surrendering to Him as Lord without reservation. As 1 Corinthians 6:20 reminds us, “You were bought at a price.” When Christ bought you, it was not for you to be committed to your pastor, your church, or other believers—He bought you to be committed to Him.

This is a crucial point because often we confuse our commitments. While it is good to be dedicated to our church or our spiritual leaders, our ultimate commitment must be to Christ alone. Jesus didn’t purchase us with His blood so that we could be committed to others; He purchased us to belong to Him entirely.

Beware of Misplaced Commitments: The Laodicean Example

Revelation 3:14 describes the church of Laodicea as “the ruler of God’s creation,” but by verse 17, we see that they have grown lukewarm, saying, “We’ve got everything we need.” They were content, self-satisfied, and believed they lacked nothing, yet they were spiritually poor.

This is a dangerous place to be—a church that is rich in material possessions and worldly success but has lost its spiritual fervor. Jesus’ call to the Laodiceans was not to rest in their self-sufficiency but to repent and return to Him with zeal (Rev. 3:19). To be zealous means to show great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or objective.

Exclusive Commitment to Christ

Committing to Christ means giving Him the right to become God in you, without holding anything back. It means acknowledging that He alone has bought you, and your life now belongs to Him. Be careful where you place your loyalty and allegiance. While it is good to be involved in church and ministry, we must never lose sight of the fact that our primary commitment is to Christ.

Jesus, during His ministry, was not swayed by the pressures of His culture, politics, or social issues. He remained solely focused on His Father’s will. In the same way, our commitment to Christ must be unwavering and exclusive. We cannot serve two masters (Matthew 6:24), and our ultimate loyalty must be to Christ alone.

Conclusion: A Call to Complete Commitment

Christ has committed Himself to you. He gave His life to purchase you, and now He desires your complete surrender. The question is, are you ready to give Him that same level of commitment? Are you ready to surrender your life to Him, forsaking all other loyalties and aligning your heart with His?

Christ calls us to total devotion. He bought us at a price, and in return, He asks for our whole lives. It is not enough to commit ourselves to our church, our family, or our work. We must first and foremost commit ourselves to Him, for only in that commitment can we truly fulfill our purpose and live in the fullness of His grace. Let Christ take full control of your life, and in doing so, you will find the freedom, purpose, and eternal life He offers to those who commit to Him without reservation.
