2 Sam. 11:2 “And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.”
I have read a short sermon before entitled “The Peril of Unconscious Decay” by Hal Lindsey and there is something troubling about this title that I read it… Anyway, the sermon was on the life of King David and it has stuck with me ever since. He talked about David’s sin with Bathsheba and how it didn’t just suddenly happen. David had been slowly, and maybe even unconsciously, slipping away from his regular duties and his walk with God. There was a slow spiritual sleep settling upon him and his eyes were becoming heavy in regards to keeping His spiritual senses active.
King David stopped going out to battle with Israel, and even when he spotted Bathsheba, it was when he had just got up out of bed… in the evening! He became to relax sleeping during the day and rising up in the evening,. Sin is deceptive. Spiritual sleep was taking place long before he fell into outward sins. Given time in this state, this ‘unconscious decay’ slowly but surely led “the man after God’s own heart” into a little dabble here, a little dabble there and before long our beloved King was a murderer and an adulterer! Watch therefore that we will not fall into this.
