How to Win a Wrestling Match Against God

Gen. 32:24-25 “And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.”

Have you wrestled with God before? Me, I always do and I also always lost. But our man Jacob here won against the Lord and therefore the Lord bless him. So what could be his secret? How did he win against the Lord?

The man mentioned in the verse above is no other than the Lord who appeared to Jacob and wrestled with him. The Lord breaks Jacob’s thigh but still Jacob won’t concede in their wrestling match until the Lord blesses him. The Lord’s time given for the wrestling match is only until daybreak. Seeing that Jacob wouldn’t concede and it was almost daybreak, the Lord gave up and blessed him.

So what’s Jacob secret? Although the Lord breaks his thigh and have suffered physically, he did not give up and won a great spiritual victory. He learned to triumph through defeat and to be strong through weakness. Sometimes, the Lord will wrestle with us. He will make us suffer physically. He might break our thighs but this is just to test us how we really hold on to His blessings. Those who hold on won. But we must also remember that the suffering doesn’t last. It is only until daybreak. So hold on until daybreak. This is how we won.
