Mat. 23:8 “But you are not to be called `Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master and you are all brothers.”
“You are all brothers.” This was made clear by our Lord Jesus Christ in the verse above. But today, more and more ministers are doing the opposite, they want to be addressed as “Pastor” instead of brother. They are telling the believers that they are not respecting them if they will not be addressed by this. In return, believers cannot call them brother anymore because they feel awkward. They feel that they are disrespecting their minister if they will just call them brother. This branding has resulted to a hierarchy we have in the Church today where if you are called pastor, you are more respected than the rest.
How did we come to this? It’s because ministers today are obsessed with titles which is the total opposite of our Lord who would not even let anyone to call Him “Rabbi.” Actually, these titles have no eternal value. When we meet our Lord one day, He will not tell you “Well done my good and faithful ‘Pastor’ or ‘Apostle’ or ‘Evangelist’ or ‘Prophet’ or Teacher.” He has no concerns about these things. Instead, He will tell you “Well done my good and faithful SERVANT” (Mat. 25:21”. If only we realize that we are Servants, then perhaps the focus on ourselves will become less and less through these titles.
I look forward to that day, when ministers become truly ministers. When their focus is not on themselves, but only on the Lord, their concerns about titles will vanish.
