Ruth 1:1 “Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.”
Elimelech and his wife Naomi are living in Israel, the Promised Land, yet we read that their eyes began looking for prosperity in the world and began living in Moab. What they did is going against the will of God for them. And because of this, God brought famine to the land of Moab.
What Elimelech and Naomi have done here is often a picture of us. It’s a picture of a believer who, when times get hard, would often look for financial prosperity that the world can provide than doing the will of God for us. Now, remember that during the Law period, famines were generally judgments of God by not obeying the Law. Obey the Law and you will be blessed, disobey it and you will suffer. But what about in today’s Grace period? What is the judgment of God for those who take for granted His Grace? Amos 8:11 says “Behold the days are coming declares the Lord God, When I will send a famine on the land, not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, But rather for hearing the Word of the Lord.” – Now that’s the worst famine than the famines during the Law!
