If we want to win over the flesh, we must walk in the Spirit. Walking in the Spirit is a profound and transformative journey that every believer is called to embrace. It involves understanding our nature as spiritual beings and learning how to align our lives with the leading of the Holy Spirit in us. Here’s an in-depth look at what it means to walk in the Spirit and how to do it effectively.

Understanding Our Nature

To walk in the Spirit, we first need to recognize our nature: “You are a spirit that has a soul that lives in a body.” This foundational understanding shapes how we interact with the world and ourselves.

Spirit: The core of our being, created in the image of God, capable of connecting and contacting God and perceiving spiritual truths.

Soul: Made up of our mind, will and emotions, which reflects both our spiritual and physical attributes (our spirit and body).

Body: Our physical attribute, through which we experience the physical world.

This is the status of the three components of man when he was first created, before he sinned. But after his fall, his spirit died (1 Cor. 15:22). He became separated from God and from all the spiritual things. His spirit became incapable of connecting and contacting God. His body was contaminated with sin and became the sole controller of his soul. His soul became evil as he is now living in the flesh.

Living or walking in the flesh means being controlled by our body which is influence by sin that dwells on it. Those who are walking in the flesh are unstable because the flesh is physical and all physical things always change. Examples of these are carnal believers who only attends church when their life circumstance is favorable. But when their circumstance is infavorable, they will stop going to church. This is why the life lived in the flesh is often characterized by fluctuations, lack of enduring peace and very unstable. This is what walking is the flesh looks like.

However, those who have been born-again are the ones whose spirits have been made alive through the indwelling of the Spirit of Christ. Their spirits now are able to influence their soul. They are the people who has the capacity to walk in the Spirit.

HOW TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT

Here are the ways and the evidence of a life live by walking in the Spirit:

1. Walking in the Truth

To walk in the Spirit, the first step is to walk in the truth. The Lord Jesus promised that “When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). The Spirit and the Truth here are one and the same. Therefore, those who are walking in the Truth are also the ones walking in the Spirit. To walk in the Truth means living the Word of God which is the Truth (John 17:17).

Now, the person who is walking in the Truth is a free person. This is because, the first thing that the Truth will do to us is to make us free (John 8:32). They are free from the bondage of sin, deception, and the lies that the enemy tries to sow in our hearts. A Church that is walking in the Truth is a free Church. The Spirit of God is free to work in them and is not restricted by anything.

The main priority of a person walking in the Truth is loving the Truth. Miracles, signs and wonders are only secondary to him/her. Our Lord Jesus’ main priority during His earthly ministry is focused on teaching the truth, as it is the foundation of spiritual growth. Many that time would want Him to show more miracles, signs and wonders. But His main priority is preaching the truth.

Those walking in the Truth constantly receives the Truth. Their spiritual lives does not remain stagnant for long. These are the reasons why walking in the Truth signifies walking in the Spirit.

2. Oppositions Everywhere

Living or walking in the Spirit here on Earth often means standing against the world and to its popular opinion and societal norms. This is because this world is against the Spirit of God. Here are the reasons why the world will persecute you:

The World as govern by Satan, hates the Spirit of God. The Spirit often clashes with the status quo. Many will oppose you simply because many are against the Truth.

Not Yielding to Fleshly Desires. You don’t yield to the desires of the flesh anymore because the Spirit of God is already influencing you. And because the Spirit is against the flesh and the flesh is against the Spirit (Gal. 5:17).

3. Standing Out and Enduring Criticism

Believers who walk in the Spirit are called to stand out. They are peculiar people in this world. They don’t go with the flow of this world. This often leads to:

Criticism: Standing out means you may face criticism and judgment from others who do not understand or agree with your spiritual path. This is part of the cost of discipleship.

Being Set Apart: As believers, we are called to be different from the world, reflecting God’s light in a dark world. This often involves standing alone and being distinct in our values and actions. That’s why the world hates us.

Enduring Shaking and Crushing: Walking in the Spirit often involves periods of intense pressure and trials. Just as olive oil is extracted through crushing, the process of spiritual growth can involve pain and sacrifice. These experiences are part of God’s refining work in our lives. We need to endure these shaking and crushing.

4. Relying on God, Not Groups

Individual Reliance: While fellowship and community are vital, to walk in the Spirit means our primary reliance should be on God rather than on groups or organizations. In the Bible, major spiritual movements sometimes arose from individual encounters with God, not in forming groups.

Avoiding Dependency on Groups: Be cautious of placing too much trust in groups or organizations for spiritual refuge. Our ultimate refuge and source of strength should be in God alone. If you are a minister of God, you rely on God alone and not in your church’s groups.

Conclusion

Walking in the Spirit is the kind of life that should be live by every believers. It involves aligning with divine truth, enduring trials, standing firm in the face of opposition, and relying on God alone. As we grow in our spiritual walk, we become more attuned to the voice of the Spirit and less swayed by the changing circumstances of the world. This path leads to a deeper, more stable, and contented life, rooted in the eternal and unchanging nature of the Spirit of God.
