How do you know that what happens to us
Are really good or really bad?
How do you know that problems are bad?
How do you know that blessings are good?

When Joseph’s father makes him a coat
Is it a good thing or is it a bad thing?
Well it is a good thing, we say.
For Jacob to give him a colorful coat.

But then Joseph’s brothers get jealous.
They saw him as a proud child.
They were angry at him
Well that’s a bad thing, we say.

Then Jacob say to Joseph,
“Haven’t seen your brothers in a while,
Go see how they’re doing”
Well that’s a good thing, we say

So Joseph goes to a place called Shechem
But he can’t find them there
So he search and still can’t find them
Well that’s a bad thing, we say

But there’s a guy standing on the field
And told him “Your brothers went to Dothan.”
Well that’s a good thing, we say
But how do we know it’s good?

Then when they saw him approaching,
His brothers wanted to kill him
Well that’s a bad thing, we say.
But how do we know it’s bad?

Then Reuben the eldest brother said.
“Let’s not kill him, he is our brother”
So they decide not to kill Joseph
Well that’s a good thing, we say

But then when the Egyptian traders came
His brothers sold him into slavery
Joseph begs them, but they won’t listen
Well that’s a bad thing, we say.

While Joseph was in slavery
He was put in charge of Potiphar’s house
He prospers in all his works
Well that’s a good thing, we say

But then Potiphar’s wife saw him
She wanted to have him
So she tried to seduce him
Well that’s a bad thing, we say

But Joseph fled from her
He didn’t want to sin against his master
He didn’t want to sin against God
Well that’s a good thing, we say

But then she accused him of rape
Then he was thrown into prison
Well that’s a bad thing, we say
But how do we know it’s bad?

But even in prison, Joseph prosper
He was put in charge of the prison
Well that’s a good thing, we say
But how do we know it is good?

Then two prisoners have dreams
One is a butler, the other’s a baker
But they don’t know the meaning of their dreams
Well that’s a bad thing, we say

But Joseph said “My God interprets dreams”
So they told him their dreams
And Joseph gives them their meanings
Well that’s a good thing, we say

Then the butler got out of prison
And Joseph told him to remember him.
But he forgets Joseph
Well that’s a bad thing, we say

Then two years later, Pharaoh has a dream too
And no one can interpret it,
Then the butler remembers Joseph
Well that’s a good thing, we say

Then Joseph was sent to Pharaoh
Pharaoh told him his dream
Joseph said there will be 7 years of famine
Well that’s a bad thing, we say

Then Joseph suggests a solution to famine
Pharaoh was very pleased with Joseph
He appoints Joseph governor of all Egypt
Well that’s a good thing, we say

Then famine got severe even in Canaan
And Jacob’s family got very hungry
Well that’s a bad thing, we say
But how do we know it’s bad?

Then Joseph’s brothers went to Egypt
Joseph recognized them and tested them
He saw that they were not like before
They recognized Joseph and beg for forgiveness

Joseph forgives them and they are reconciled with him
He told them to bring their families to Egypt
So they brought all their family from Canaan to Egypt
And was never became hungry again

Joseph told them “You intended to harm me,
But God intended it all for good
To accomplish what is now being done,
For the saving of many lives

So based on the story of Joseph,
How do we know if what happened to us
Is either good or bad?
How are we sure they are good or bad?

Here now is the bigger picture of the story:

If Joseph’s brothers were not jealous of him
Then they never have sold Joseph,
If Joseph was not sold,
Then Joseph never goes to Egypt.

If Joseph never goes to Egypt,
Then he is never sold to Potiphar.
If he is never sold to Potiphar,
Potiphar’s wife never falsely accuses him of rape.

If Potiphar’s wife never accused him of rape,
Then he is never put in prison.
If he is never put in prison,
Then he never meets the baker and butler of Pharaoh.

If he never meets the baker and butler of Pharaoh,
Then he never interprets their dreams.
If he never interprets their dreams,
Then he never gets to interpret Pharaoh’s dream.

If he never gets to interpret Pharaoh’s dream,
Then he never is made governor of Egypt.
If he is never made governor,
Then he never wisely administrates the severe famine.

If he never wisely administrates the severe famine,
Then his family back in Canaan will all die.
If his family in Canaan dies,
Then the Messiah can’t come forth from a dead family.

If the Messiah can’t come forth,
Then the Lord Jesus was never born.
If the Lord Jesus was never born,
Then you and I are all dead in our sins.

So what is happening to you right now,
Are they good or bad?
Are your problems bad? Or are your blessings good?
How do you know?

But always remember,
What Romans 8:28 tells us:
“All things work together for good to them that love God,
To them who are the called according to his purpose”

At the end of the day, they are all good
For God can make the bad things from the enemy
To be good for those who love Him
This is why, they are all winners in this world!
