My question is: Why do you believe that Jesus is God? How can Jesus be God?
Only the Father is God. Jesus constantly referred to his Father in heaven while he was her on earth. Jesus emphasized that he was God’s son, not God. The Pharisees even said that Jesus claimed to be the son of God, not that he claimed to be God.
There is but one God and that is God the Father. There is but one Messiah and that is Jesus. Christ the Messiah is not God. Only God is God.

I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is God because this is what the Scriptures tell me. So I’ll let the Scriptures speak for themselves. Although I may add some comments after them.
Here are the Scriptures from the Old Testament that tells us that Jesus is God:
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
It is clear that the child that will be born will be called “The Mighty God an the Everlasting Father.”
Isaiah 43:11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.
Aside from our Lord God, there is no other Savior. GOD ALONE IS THE SAVIOR. We don’t have other Savior. If Jesus is not God, then He is not the Savior.
Isaiah 43:11 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
The Son will be called “Emmanuel.” The word Emmanuel here means “God is with us.”
So how about the New Testament Scriptures? Do they tell us that Jesus is God? Let’s take a look:
Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of our great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Jesus is our great God and Savior.
John 20:27-29 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” (28) Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” (29) Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Jesus is both Lord and God according to Thomas. And the Lord Jesus did not corrected Thomas about this, which means this is true.
Romans 9:5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.
2 Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours.
The same here, He is God over all and Savior.
Hebrews 1:8-9 But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. (9) You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.”
Here, it is emphasized that the Son , Who is our Lord Jesus Christ, is God.
You said Jesus only emphasized that he was God’s son, not God . This is incorrect. He said that He was the ‘I AM’ of the Old Testament! The people knew that He is claiming to be God. And the people wanted to stone Him for this:
John 8:57-59 You are not yet fifty years old, the Jews said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” (58) I tell you the truth, Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” (59) At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
If Jesus is only human and He claimed to be before Abraham, then there is only two possibilities on these: Either He is a lunatic or He is a false teacher. A mere man that said the sort of things that Jesus said is either of these two. But our Lord is not crazy and certainly He is not a false teacher.
So this is it. These are the reasons why I believe that Jesus is God and these are how He is God. Hopefully these scriptures would help you realized also that our Lord Jesus is indeed God.
