Jonah 4:2 “He prayed to the LORD, “O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.”
The prophet Jonah knew the Lord so well. He knew that He is gracious, compassionate and slow to anger. He knew that God abounds in love and relents from sending calamity if possible. Let’s pause here for a while… Do you know these things too? I hope you do because this is the truth!
But back to Jonah, this is the character of God why he is worried. You see, Jonah didn’t want God to relent. He didn’t want God to be compassionate. He didn’t want God to be gracious. Well, not for Nineveh anyway. He certainly wanted those things for himself… just not with those whom he didn’t like. And this is not only prophet Jonah, this is me too! And I think this is what you are too. Oh, what tricky, mixed-up people we can be! Forgive us Lord.
