Rev. 5:5 “And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.”
One of the elders told John that the Lion from the tribe of Judah is worthy to open the book. But when John turns to see the Lion, behold, he sees a Lamb instead (Rev. 5:4-6). Having heard of the Lion, John might naturally expect to see Christ in a Kingly mighty power, but instead, he sees a Lamb, the opposite of a Lion and the emblem of weakness. And it was not just a Lamb, but a slain Lamb that speaks of total weakness.
So what does this mean? The One that prevails as the Lion is actually the One who suffered as the Lamb. He cannot be a Lion unless He became a Lamb. His power to overcome in opening the book is that He has overcome by going into death. As the Lamb was slain, He overcame sin and death and the devil. Having overcome as the suffering Lamb He has acquired the right to destroy every enemy as the mighty Lion. As the Lion, Christ is able to TAKE the book; as the Lamb, He is worthy to OPEN the book.
So we need to always remember this: In order for us to be Lions, we need to be a lamb. In order for us to be Kings, we need to be servants. This is the example that our Lord had showed us.
