John 8:33-34 “They answered him, we be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committed sin is the servant of sin.”
In the above verse, the Jews claimed that they were never in bondage and that they don’t need the Lord to set them free. These people are so blind that they cannot see that they are under the yoke of the Romans that time. And what about the Egyptians, Assyrian, Babylonians, Persians and Greeks before? But most of all, they cannot see that one huge chain that bound them all – sin. Today, there are many liberation movements: the Women’s liberation movement, Homosexual liberation, sexual revolution – all promised us liberty. But these are false freedom.
Those Jews in our Lord’s day are a microcosm of the whole world: Man is in bondage of sin and his pride doesn’t allow him to realize it. But the Lord Jesus has set us free from the guilt and penalty of sin. He is now freeing us from the power of sin, and one day, we will be totally free from the presence of sin. Our Lord is the breaker of every chains that bind us.
