
Jer. 32:9 “And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.”
The verse above is very strange. Not because it is strange for Jeremiah to buy land, but because it is not the time to buy lands. You see, if you read the prior verses, you will know that Babylon attacked Judah at that time to capture its inhabitants and Babylonian armies are about to take control of the city. For a typical land owner, it should be the time of selling land. But here, Jeremiah buys instead.
This is actually to show the Israelites that through his actions, Jeremiah would show that he had faith that God would one day bring the Jews back to this land. It was to show the people he believed God when He said that they were going to return to the land one day. This is very remarkable.
