
Gen. 44:32 “For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, then let me bear the blame before my father forever.”
The word “surety” here is an Arab word that means “to exchange, to take as a pledge, to give as a pledge.” This word denotes the action of giving a pledge or a guarantor (Gen 43:9). Judah wanted to be a surety for Benjamin when Joseph tested his brothers and required Benjamin to be his slave. Judah step up and told Joseph that he will take the place of Benjamin. Up until now God has not revealed which of Jacob’s 12 sons the Messiah will come through. If you were looking at this point of time, you would definitely pick Joseph for he is such an amazing man and the clearest picture of Christ in scripture. But here is the first prophetic clue that Judah will play a part. Judah is willing to put his own life on the line if anything happens to Benjamin. He is willing to take his place.
