Col 2:8 “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.”
Every day, I receive text messages telling me that my mobile number has been chosen from their lucky draw and that I will receive a whopping 1 million pesos. I also lost count of the number of emails I received giving me the fantastic news that someone I’ve never met, from a country I’ve never visited, has died and has left me millions of dollars in their will. All I need to do is contact them and give them my bank account details so they can deposit the money. Brilliant! Why am I so lucky that my mobile number is chosen every day? With those text messages and emails, I have millions already! Unfortunately for me, I am so rich that I don’t need those millions (hahaha).
Deception is rife in our world. Everyday, people are out to deceive. Each day people enter Ponzi schemes and pyramiding through so-called honest, plausible-sounding men. Each day people are fooled into entering their bank account’s usernames and passwords into fake websites. Deception in this world abounds and spiritually speaking it is no different. Paul advises us through the verse above not to be captive by those. The Greek word for captive here is interesting and has the thought of being kidnapped or taken hostage. They will kidnap you of your time for the Lord. Their activities will take you hostage that you can’t grow in the Lord and it will be difficult to escape. I hope you have the courage to break free from these chains.
